Parent Advisory - SXSW Entry (School Project)

At first glance there appears to be love hate relationship between teens and their parents. Well, Perhaps hate is too strong word. Teens don’t understand why parents cannot relate to them; after all, they were young once (they were teens, too!). Parents, on the other hand, don’t understand why their kids don’t act more responsibly.

A new study confirms that parental behavior can affect how likely teenagers are to join a gang or participate in gang delinquency.

But the study also reveals that the same behaviors that discourage gang activity in teens from one ethnic group might have no effect, or even encourage gang activity, in teens from a different ethnic group.

The same research indicates that gang intervention progr Read more

Violence seems to be on the rise among young people in school. Fighting, attacks and shooting are becoming more and more common all the time. Parents and communities need to take the steps to improve family and school relationships in order to create a happy, healthy environment for students that will result in less violence and more success for students everywhere. Only when parents, teachers, religious and community leaders work together will there be a dramatic reduction in harmful school violence.

It is important to note that the most common reason for school violence is low self-esteem. Students who perpetrate school violence tend to have low self-esteem. Often these young people have been the victims of verbal abuse throu Read more

It’s the same story every year – you worry about whether the new teachers will understand your child. Will the teacher adapt to your child’s individual learning speed? Will she be able to recognize your child’s special aptitudes and talents? You don’t want to be the overbearing, interfering parent, but you still want to know these things.

You certainly cannot hold your child’s teacher accountable for every classroom nuance. After all, teachers are qualified educationalists, and we have to trust their judgment to a fair degree without questioning it. So what’s the solution? How do you stay on top of how your child is faring under his or her teacher? The answer is – build a good parent teacher relationship.

The Principal’s Role in Rural Schools

“Leadership is influence…[and] the ability to obtain followers.” (Cruzeiro & Morgan, 2006, p. 569)

Principals of rural schools spend a large percentage of their time teaching cross-age, multi-grade students (Starr & White, 2008). As recent legislation and litigation continue to place more responsibility on the principal, site level responsibilities challenge the constant, increasing role of the administrator (Cruzeiro & Morgan, 2006).

Most principals in rural schools get little in the way of administrative support, ancillary personnel, and ground staff (Starr & White, 2008). While principals in larger schools are able to delegate and share in management task Read more

Homeschooling vs Public School Can We All Get Along?

Homeschoolers and the public system can (and do in many communities) comfortably and successfully work side by side and in the best case scenarios, these two entities actually become benefactors of each others time and talents. As homeschoolers, having the respect of a local educational community is an essential factor in this co-existing equation and is readily achieved by following three very basic, yet vital, steps.

First homeschooling  parents make a point of meeting and talking with the local school  principal. Explain to him or her why the family has chosen homeschooling vs public school and discuss any long term educational goals wh Read more

Making friends is a skill, just like playing the piano or riding a bike. Skills can be learned and behaviors can be changed. While it may require more effort for some people to be comfortable in groups, it can be learned, especially if the child is willing to put forth the effort and knows that she has your support.

Be sure to encourage a child’s positive efforts to get along with peers and to find a friend, even when it appears that such attempts are not meeting with success. Remind her of the fine qualities that she has that will add to the friendship when just the right person comes along.

Another reminder is that making just the right friend for her may take some time and not to give up. Help her to see what she has to o Read more

Radclyffe School: developing a richer dialogue with parents

Children throughout Tampa wake up each Monday through Friday and head out to school, lunch and books in hand. While they may bemoan another day filled with reading, writing and arithmetic, they are receiving their education from one of the highest ranked school districts in the state.

Hillsborough County School District has a policy of offering a dynamic cross-section of schooling options because they understand that a “one size fits all” education doesn’t coalesce with their community. These include Walton Academy of the Performing Arts and two teen parent schools. Among the public schooling options are magnet and charter schools.

We all remember the long arduous days of selling gift wrap and candy door-to-door for a local school fundraiser, unsure if you were going to be able to raise enough money and get the “prize” you longed for. Those days have come and gone. Fundraisers have moved away from the door-to-door selling model and more towards non-traditional methods that prove to be more effective, efficient and successful.

Parenting Your Teen: What Every Parent MUST Know

The research is clear: Students perform better in school when their parents are actively involved in their education.

“Teachers help students soar and make their hopes and dreams come true,” said Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association. “And when parents are involved in their children’s education, they will go farther – and the schools they attend are better.”

NEA, which represents 2.8 million teachers, education support professionals and other educators, offers five easy ways for parents to get more involved in education year-round:

1. Check in with teachers on a regular basis. Be proactive and don’t wait for a problem or challenge to arise before taking action.
